Concussion

Discharge instructions after emergency room treatment

Project Background

After a mild traumatic brain injury (concussion), children need to follow a step-by-step return to activity and be seen by their healthcare provider before returning to sports. Emergency medicine physician-researchers asked us to help them redesign their discharge instructions using our comic-based visual communication approach.

Client: Children’s Hospital Wisconsin

Our Work

We redesigned their discharge instructions with visual, easy-to-follow instructions for steps to take during the 48 hours after leaving the emergency department.

Results

In a follow-up project, we created multiple versions of the handout and new video content for a randomized controlled trial comparing rest to active recovery.
