The Art and Science of Biosimilar Insulin
Explaining biosimilar insulin for a global pharmaceutical brand
Project Background
Gan & Lee approached us to explain biosimilar insulin and help their physician audience learn about the new regulatory requirements based on high similarity to a reference biologic medication. The goal of the project was to share this information and help them stand out among other brands that are also developing insulin glargine molecules.
Client: Gan & Lee Pharmaceuticals
Our Work
We designed a visual metaphor inspired by the practice of contemporary Chinese calligraphers producing skilled reproductions of work by traditional masters of the form. We worked with a professional calligrapher and an artist, who are both featured in the film. The metaphor also played with the relationship between the Chinese characters meaning “island” and “insulin.”

Results
The project debuted at the Gan & Lee booth at the 2022 American Academy of Diabetes conference. For this event, we hired a calligrapher to transliterate and write names of conference attendees who visited the booth. The project earned a Silver Aster Award.
